Memorial Day is a time for us to celebrate the contributions of those that have defended our liberty. In America, and especially in Texas, we do that by gathering together around food, fun and fellowship. That’s what makes Texas great and how we honor those that are no longer with us. As you celebrate this Memorial Day, please do so safely; rededicate yourself to fully enjoying your freedom and to being a champion for the freedom of all Americans. If you are in the San Antonio area there is a perfect opportunity to do all three! SAILS is having an event to celebrate Memorial Day; raise awareness of disability issues and; support an exciting event coming up in the fall. See the information below for more information.
Have a safe and happy Memorial Day!

The SILC Conference wrapped up yesterday. What a huge success! Over 350 attended the conference and I was impressed by the energy and excitement everyone had. There was some fantastic information about the programs, tools and services to be found across Texas and some fantastic ideas shared between the conference attendees. Many attendees took the opportunity to visit the Capitol yesterday afternoon to express their concerns with the pending budget cuts. It is imperative that we take that same energy home with us across the state; to take the time to educate our friends, family, neighbors and community leaders that these cuts are bad business for Texas and; continue the fight for the services that are vital to Texans with disabilities. Great job to the staff and volunteers at SILC for a superb job putting on the conference. It was a tremendous amount of work but you put on a quality “show” that I think everyone enjoyed!
There are a couple of events coming up! I hope you have registered and will be attending the SILC “Community Living: It’s My Choice” conference which starts Sunday. If not, you can go to www.txsilc.org for more information. Tomorrow (Friday), join us at the state capitol from 10-whenever we finish to tell the governor and the legislature how important community services are. We will be at the capitol again on Tuesday from noon until ? to again talk to legislators. This is a big year at the capitol and draconian cuts are looming. Your voice is needed!
Heart of Central Texas Independent Living Center (HOCTILC) previewed the new HOCTILC Cool Tools store in downtown Belton Monday night. The crew at HOCTILC had some great refreshments for the throngs of people browsing the aisles for the latest and greatest technology to make our lives easier… and more fun. From talking clocks and watches to a cool “Boogie Board” to taking notes on the latest in high tech gadgetry can be found and Cool Tools. In addition to the gadgets, there’s also some pretty cool handcrafted stuff as well. My favorite is the handmade pens made from exotic woods and even bird feathers. Trust me, stop by Cool tools at 222 E. Central in Belton or visit http://www.hoctilc.org for more info!
Coastal Bend Center for Independent Living (CBCIL) unveiled a new transportation program aimed at providing people with disabilities in rural areas opportunities to get to and from work in more urban centers. The Mobility Options Project partners CBCIL with Green-n-Go Taxi Service’s Accessible Cab, LeFleur Transportation, Rural Economic Assistance League (R.E.A.L.) and Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) to get consumers in rural areas to the nearest RTA Park and Ride to access the transportation system in order to get to and from work. Last Friday, the transportation partners “circled the wagons” around a good crowd of consumers, stakeholders, community leaders and others who were interested to unveil the project. This is an excellent example of how CILs identify a need among consumers; collaborate with community leaders; identify and secure funding and; address the need. Systems advocacy at its very best. Great job CBCIL!
Here you will learn about some of the things going on at TACIL. Upcoming events, issues relative to our members and the people they serve and the good things our members are doing. Like last week, Coastal Bend Center unveiled their partnership with local transportation providers and Texas Workforce Commision to begin providing affordable accessible transportation to and from employment opportunities to people with disabilities in rural areas. And last night when Heart of Central Texas Center launched the brand new “Cool Tools” store in Belton. Details on both of these events will be Tumbld later today. I hope you find this information useful and that you will Tumbl along with us as we make Texas a better place for everyone!
